Song of the Waterways is a truly bespoke historic narrowboat. She has an interesting history having originally built by Les Allen in 1977. She was later rescued and restored by John and Madeleine Forth. The current owner acquired Song of the Waterways from John and Madeleine in 2003. She has a classic Lister JD2M engine. The saloon and the galley need trims to complete their refit. Viewing recommended.


59ft 6″ Trad style narrow boat. Stylish 10:8:4 steelwork, hull built by Les Allen GT giving beautiful lines with a long fore deck and a trad stern. The boat originally had a wooden cabin top but was comprehensively restored between 2000 and 2001 by John Forth when a steel cabin top was added. Quality fit-out by Bourne Boats in painted ply panels with solid ash trims. The traditional style boatman’s cabin painted in scumble with Roses and Castles painting by Madeleine Forth. Powered by a Classic 1950s Lister JP2M Diesel 2cylinder 22hp engine with twin alternators; coupled to Dursley Blackstone mechanical gearbox housed in it’s own engine room. From the Bow

From the bow which has a storage locker there is a 10′ 4″ fore deck with a wooden cratch frame and a zipped and studded vinyl cover. The water tank is located in the bow with a surface mounted filler. The headlamp is mounted on the front of the cratch. There is a 12v, wall light in the cratch.

Generic fixtures and fittings

The ceilings are lined with painted plywood panels trimmed in solid ash. The hull sides and cabin sides are lined with vinyl covered plywood panels with solid ash trims except in the engine room which has painted tongue and groove. All interior wood has been painted or varnished. The flooring is solid oak planking throughout apart from the bathroom which has stone effect tiles and the engine room which has marine ply.

Saloon 7′ 11″

Wooden, stable style front doors, open out onto the fore deck.

Fixed Furniture: Under gunwale cupboard and shelving unit. 1 x cupboard. 1 x bookcase.

Loose Furniture: Two seat sofa with foot stools.

Heating: 1 x central heating radiator.

Lighting: 2 x fixed portholes. 8 x 12v, halogen ceiling lights. 2 x 12v, halogen wall lights.

Galley 7′ 5″

The walk through galley has custom built units with oak panelled door and drawer fronts with granite effect laminate worktops.

Base units: 1 x large corner cupboard. 1 x 3 drawer unit. 1 x single cupboard. Fridge housing. Washing machine housing.

Wall Units: White painted wall unit with drawers.

Appliances: Country Leisure, inset four burner gas hob. 12v, Lec fridge with icebox. Indesit washer/dryer. Inset, heavy duty composite sink and drainer with matching monobloc tap.

Lighting: 2 x sets of steel side doors, wood lined internally. 6 x 12v, LED ceiling lights. 1 x Skylight with Prism.

Bathroom 4′ 1″

The full width bathroom has a white suite comprising:

Suite: Fully tiled shower cubicle with thermostatic shower and a shower curtain. Vanity unit with wash bowl, chrome mixer taps and a cupboard beneath. Thetford cassette toilet with ceramic bowl and one spare cassette. Wall mounted mirror.

Storage: Storage cupboard beside the shower.

Heating: 1 x towel radiator.

Engine room 6′ 10″

The engine room houses the Classic 1950s Lister JP2M Diesel 2 cylinder, 22hp engine coupled to Dursley Blackstone mechanical gearbox, producing a lovely historic boat sound. All the other usual hardware for the running of the boat is also housed in this area.

Storage: under gunwale storage.

Lighting: 2 x sets of steel side doors, wood lined internally, one with a roof hatch and side steps. 1 x Pigeon Box. 2 x fixed portholes. 1 x 12v, ceiling light.

Boatman’s Cabin 8′ 2″

Aft of the engine room is the traditional style boatman’s cabin which has the usual fixtures and fittings.

Fixed Furniture: Bench seat with storage space underneath. Boatman's drop down bed with cupboards above and below. Angled table cupboard with drop down door/table, cupboards above and beneath. Cubby holes and ticket drawer on the aft bulkheads.

Heating: Epping style Boatman’s range.

Lighting: 1 x fixed porthole. 1 x Bull’s Eye roof light. 1 x 12v, ceiling light.

Stern 3′ 8″

Steel rear doors and sliding roof hatch, wood panelled internally lead to the rear deck and steering position.

Controls: The engine controls are traditional speed wheel and push pull gear lever.

2 x 13kg propane cylinders housed in the bow provide gas to the hob.

The 250 gallon integral galvanised steel water tank is located beneath the well deck. Water pump with pressure switch is located adjacent to the tank. Twin coil calorifier is heated by the 240v immersion heater, Webasto diesel fired boiler and/or the engine heat exchanger.

Heating is provided by the Webasto diesel fired boiler running 3 radiators and the Boatman’s Range in the Boatman’s cabin.

The boat was repainted in 2014/2016. The boat was last docked for blacking in 2016. The hull is protected by 6 anodes and a Galvanic Isolator.

The boat comes equipped with a normal cruising inventory including a full set of ropes and fenders. Any additional items not listed must be negotiated separately with the owner.

The boat is powered by a Classic 1950s Lister JP2M, 2 cylinder, 22hp diesel engine coupled to Dursley Blackstone mechanical gearbox with 2:1 reduction, turning the propeller. The exhaust is lagged, silenced and vents out through a chimney in the roof. The engine powers the 12v alternator to charge the 2 start batteries and the 4 leisure batteries.
